Chapter Eleven
We sat with our backs against some rocks near the crackling fire, me clutching my little strip of blanket across most of my front and the rest of the wolves lounging nearby. Galen sat on my left in wolf form, and I buried my fingers in his fur. At least that part of me was toasty warm. Carlos, the wolf we had recovered from the witches, huddled against his side, still shivering.
Liam came back with the slightly bloody phone and two very bloody rabbits. He dropped the phone on Markâs lap with a flourish and then tore the rabbits into pieces, which he threw down in front of the injured wolves. They dug into the raw meat with gusto. In that moment, I could see how food, even if it was of the raw and bloody variety, could mean love.
Mark stayed next to me in human form while we waited. Several of his wolves braced him on his other side, including the injured Will, whose wound looked better each time I checked. Lying in a heap like this, safe and warm after all the stress of the day, felt pretty good. I felt a hollow pit in my gut when I thought of the deaths, but I couldnât see how we could have saved them. I added them to my tally to deal with later.
Mark made another call to Brent and gave him the broad overview. Brent said he would be here with reinforcements and supplies in about thirty minutes. Hopefully, those supplies included some clothes and food that was not raw meat.
I could probably manage a change, but I wanted to talk to Zaleria when she woke and I was pretty exhausted already. I shivered as a cold gust snuck under my blanket, and Mark matter-of-factly pulled me more closely against him while we talked, his arm wrapped around my shoulders and cushioning my head against the rock. He radiated heat and calm. I ignored the fact that we were both basically naked, and in truth, it didnât seem as important as it had when our circumstances werenât so extreme. Galen moved closer on my other side and rested his head on my knee. I threaded my fingers through his thick fur and scratched as he leaned into my hand. Between Mark on one side and Galen on the other, I felt warm enough, even if the boulder at my back and the rocks and dirt I was sitting on were less than comfortable.
âWhy did you let him take you, Torrin?â Mark asked.
I sighed. âI didnât have any good choices when he broke into my room, but at least I knew you could follow us and find out what was going on. By the way, thank you for letting it play out and not leaving me in the clutches of whoever they were.â
âWe almost didnât let you leave the yard. Galen wanted to rescue you right away,â Mark said, his voice dry. Galen growled on my lap. âI saw you prancing when you ran out and trusted that you were all right.
